I STARTED WORKING WITH COMPUTORS ON A MAC SE THAT WAS IN A BOX AT THE
CERAMIC STUDIO WHERE I WORKED. WHEN I BEGAN CREATING PRINTS WITH MY FIRST
COLOR COMPUTOR AND PRINTER I WAS INTRIGUED BY SIMILARITY OF PIXELS PER
INCH OF THE PRINTS AND THE KNOTS PER INCH OF FOLK CARPETS.
I SUBMITTED A PROPOSAL TO VISIT SOUTHERN INDIA TO FILM THE CREATION OF A
CARPET FROM THE COMPUTER PRINT DESIGNS BY TIBETAN REFUGEES. THE FILM
WOULD FOCUS ON THE WEAVERS ARTISTIC HERITAGE AND THE CULTURAL AND
POLITICAL ASPECTS OF THEIR MEMBERS AND THEIR THOUGHTS ABOUT WORKING
WITH A WESTERN ARTIST AND HIS COMPUTOR PRINTS.
I PLACED MANY EMAILS AND MET WITH A TIBETAN FAMILY FROM MONTREAL
CANADA WHO WERE VISITING SEATTLE FOR THE TIBETAN FESTIVAL AT THE SEATTLE
CENTER. IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCE. THE GRANDMOTHER WHO HAD
ACCOMPANIED THE FAMILY SPOKE THROUGH HER GRANDSON SAYING THAT THE
DESIGNS WERE FASCINATING TO HER AND THAT SHE COULD SEE THE EXCITING
CREATIVE POSSIBILITIES.
THE PROPOSAL WAS NOT FUNDED SO I TURNED TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD WHERE THERE
ARE MANY CARPET GALLERIES. I RECIEVED A VERY POSITIVE RESPONCE FROM THE
TURABI GALLERY. THE DIRECTOR SHOWED ME THE KONYA FOLK CARPETS WOVEN IN
TURKEY AS THEY HAD APROXIMATELY THE SAME KNOT TO PIXAL COUNT. THREE
WEEKS LATER MY DESIGNS WERE IN KONYA WHERE THE WEAVERS BEGAN SCALING UP
THE PRINTS TO FUL SIZE, 7 X 5' PATTERNS.
I HAD SENT TWO DESIGNS. ONE HAD A NUDE IN THE COMPOSITION AND WAS NOT
USED FOR RELIGIOUS ASPECTS. THE TWO CARPETS ARE FROM THE SAME DESIGN. ONE
TALLER AND THE OTHER MORE SQUARE. THE WEAVERS INTERPRETATION OF
FORM AND COLOR IS VERY DELIGHTFUL.
THE WAVERS USED NATURAL WOOLS, COTTON AND DYES TO CREATE THE THICK
LUXURIOUS ART CARPETS AFTER A YEARS EFFORT. TWO CARPETS WERE COMPLETED
IN 1999.
