The oil paintings in the Kyoto Ocean Suite are painted in progressive stages.
Starting with a white primed canvas followed by a thin warm earth toned
underpainting that establishes the form and the light and dark tones.
The background is painted in with a layer of thinned oil paint blocking in the color. Once the color area has been applied I work back into the color adjusting it's hue and tone.

In this painting I had begun and then decided to change the bottom Koi. I painted the new Koi in with white gesso and then painted the background over the previous fish creating a new composition.
